Dončić, who had a difficult Game 4, rebounded with a 31-point triple-double, guiding the Mavericks to a 104-92 win at the Paycom Center.
Following a disappointing Game 4, Dončić appeared mentally and physically rejuvenated. He avoided his usual on-court disputes with officials and showed no signs of knee trouble. This focus allowed him to excel, with 31 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. His efforts have put Dallas ahead 3-2 in the series, bringing them closer to the conference finals.
The Mavericks seized control early, especially in the second quarter. They went on a significant 16-5 run, stifling the Thunder’s offense for nearly four minutes. A highlight was Dončić’s full-court lob to Dereck Lively. By halftime, Dallas had a 10-point lead, which they maintained throughout the second half.
Despite taking only two free throws in the first three quarters, the Mavericks kept a double-digit lead into the fourth quarter. Each time the Thunder tried to cut the deficit, Dallas responded effectively. This resilience was evident when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s and-1 play late in the third was quickly countered by the Mavericks.
In the fourth quarter, Dallas secured the win with an early 10-4 run, extending their lead to 19 points. Although the Thunder responded with a quick 10-0 run, the Mavericks held on. Key defensive plays, including a block by Derrick Jones Jr. on a Chet Holmgren three-pointer, sealed the game.
Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 30 points, eight assists, and six rebounds. Holmgren and Jalen Williams added 13 and 12 points respectively, but their contributions were insufficient. The Thunder struggled with their shooting, hitting only 25% from beyond the arc and allowing over 100 points for just the third time this postseason.
Dončić’s performance in Game 5 was his third 30-point triple-double in the playoffs, highlighting his crucial role for Dallas. Derrick Jones Jr. added 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while Kyrie Irving and P.J. Washington also made significant contributions.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault had anticipated a challenging game, noting the Mavericks’ intensity in previous matches. His concerns proved valid as Dallas brought the same physicality and effort, dominating from start to finish.
The Mavericks now aim to close out the series at home in Game 6, scheduled for Saturday night in Dallas. A victory would secure their second trip to the Western Conference finals in the last three seasons, ending the Thunder’s successful season.
